Rotor Balancing - Terms and Conditions
Rotors are balance dynamically with flails on at the operating speed of the machine in question. Where possible we prefer to balance with new flails and fixings, this is to ensure we get as true a reading as possible on the shaft itself rather than balancing out the inaccuracies in the flails. It is also a much simpler process to balance the rotor when all flails and fixings have been replaced
When balancing direct drive multicut heads we also insist on fitting new bearings, irrespective of how long they have been fitted, this is for the safety of our staff to ensure the housings have been fitted correctly and are not at risk of collapsing in the balance rig.
Any excessive play in the flail lug bolt holes needs to be resolved through the replacement of the flail lug (prices on sheet) this is again to ensure we are balancing the rotor as accurately as possible – If the rotor was balanced with the bolts tightened in one position, this could then lead to an imbalance if the bolts were to then move within the flail lug.
If the free end shaft is worn and the bearing is loose there are 2 options depending on the extent of the damage – If it is minor it is sometimes possible to centre punch the shaft and fit the bearing with locktite (no charge) if this isn’t suitable then the shaft can be built up with weld and lathed down to the correct size (usually max of £180+VAT)
The balancing charges are laid out on the attached sheet and are based on the rotor coming to us as a bare rotor and being returned flailed up and balanced, ready to fit back into the flail head. Anything else will incur additional charges – For example if the rotor comes in a head and needs to be removed and then refitted, or if the rotor is supplied pre fitted with worn/unsuitable flails. Additional labour is charged out at £60/hour + VAT
We can arrange collection and delivery of bare rotors, charges are based on pallet spaces (roughly £50/space mainland uk) 1.2m rotors must be strapped diagonally on a pallet to ensure they fit within a 1.2m x 1.2m square, even if this hangs over the edge of a standard euro pallet, this ensures there is only a single pallet charge, all other larger rotors will likely exceed this and will simply then need to be just securely strapped to the pallet, if ratchet straps are used we will always where possible try to return these with the rotor.
Peak season turn around is usually 5 to 10 working days – this does not include transport time, we will of course endeavour to complete the works quicker but would sooner work on a worst case basis.
During the winter months this turn around will be a bit quicker, but still work on 5 working days (not including transport)
As a rule we do not straighten rotors, we counterbalance, on some larger topper rotors (over 2.5m) we will attempt to straighten the rotor if the bend is such that it is impossible to counter balance, when this is required there will be a an additional charge (£85) When this has been completed there is a possibility that due to the shaft already being fatigued it may be more prone to bending again in the future. However, when we straighten the rotor it is usually as a last resort and assumed that the alternative is scrappage/replacement. Our experience has shown that this is infrequent and uncommon and will usually cure the problem.
Not every rotor runs smooth through the entire speed range of the operating machine, as stated before, we balance to the operating speed of the base machine and will always endeavour to have the rotor running right at this speed. If a rotor has been particularly difficult to balance the operating speed may well be a fairly narrow range, you should however still be able to find a ‘sweet spot’ where the rotor runs smooth. There can be a number of other factors that effect the smoothness of the flail heads operation – If the rotor doesn’t run correctly when refitted our policy is to eliminate these before going down the route of rebalancing the rotor – We never return a rotor in a condition we are not happy with unless this has been explicitly discussed and the rotor was in an especially bad condition and costs were to be kept to an absolute minimum.
Where rotors are being delivered by your own courier, we ask that they are clearly labeled with your full contact details and that we have been made aware of there dispatch. We also ask that the attached form is sent with the rotor in a waterproof bag. As A General Rule we do not like customers to bring the rotor and wait whilst it is being balanced – The procedure can take all day and there are times when the work must stop to carry out emergency repairs on other customers machines.
